Are You A Champ Or Chump?

Arrow Down
What

Some call it whiff-whaff, others call it table tennis. We call it the greatest sport to have graced Shockoe Bottom and the average workday.

Things might get out-of-hand.

For the love of pong, polish your paddle and slip on your sweatbands (maybe wash them first) to participate in the greatest distraction the workday has ever witnessed.

When

June 21st
3:00 PM

Why

For those who snuff and say: “My grandma plays ping pong,” well, you can let her know she’s invited. Shockoe Showdown is an effort to join local pongers who are passionate about the sport and want to play for a good cause. And yes, ping pong is a sport. In order to separate table tennis from the realm of non-sporty sports like synchronized swimming and competitive eating, we must join forces and prove to our community the realness that is PING PONG.

Official Shockoe Showdown Rules

Rules – Competitive Bracket

  • The first player to get to 21 points wins but the player must win by 2 points.
  • Players will alternate 5 serves.
  • The player facing game point always gets to serve.
  • Each player is allowed to claim 2 time-outs up to 1 minute during a match.
  • Player cannot rest his/her free hand on the table while the ball is still in play. However, it is OK if the player’s free hand touches the corner of the table.
  • Upon serving, the ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first bounces on the server’s side and then the opponent’s side.
  • If the serve is legal except that it touches the net, it is called a let serve. There is no limit to consecutive let serves. Another serve attempt follows a let.
  • You are allowed to serve so that the ball goes off the side line after it bounces on your opponent’s side.
  • You must serve from behind the end line of the table.
